Section: Fiction Writing Tools

National Novel Writing Month is almost upon us. In honour of that, have some writing links.

yWriter
Open source text editor specifically intended for writing novels.  You have a chapter breakdown on the left, goal/mood/etc markers for each chapter window, sections for character biographies, etc wow zomg. I haven’t tested it extensively yet, but it looks very promising.

Write or Die
Starting from the premise that immediate punishment is more effective than potential reward, this website will assail you with evil sounds and a flashing screen if you  stop writing. Perfect for that last minute rush. I especially like it that you can set your own goal and time period.

Dresden Codak simply and elegantly lists 42 Essential 3rd Act Plot Twists.

Writers
A discussion community for writers of all ilks on Dreamwidth.

Moon Phase Images
Tells you what phase the moon was in on any particular date.  Useful if you want your 16th century assassin to operate on a dark moon a few days before Christmas, and are obsessive about getting details like that right. Also, it’s just neat.

Section: Look At It This Way

How Do We Understand This Experience?
Abby Jean on one of my new favourite blogs, FWD/Forward, on culture-bound perception of panic attacks.

The Negative Side of Positive Thinking
Annaham, also on FWD/Forward, on the big problems with assuming bad health can be imagined away, as per se The Secret.

Television: Bloody Torchwood
Yes, it’s still FWD/Forward, an article by Anna about the casual ableism in the Season 2 Torchwood episode Adrift.  I don’t think Torchwood is alone in committing this sort of thing, either, and we ought to notice it and think about it.

“There’s something wrong with Esther”: Disability, Deception, and Orphan
Tera on FWD/Forward on that lovely horror movie cliché, of making disabled people into monsters.

Section: Feminist Geekery Win

MikeeUSA’s code, now available on GeekFeminism.org
GeekFeminism.org takes the code posted on SourceForge.com by a violent anti-feminist who was booted for hate speech, fixes it, and adds pink ponies.
