Tips and Tricks for Young Ladies (and Ladies of a Certain Age): On Menstruation Pains and Work
Note: This applies specifically to situations were sick days are not limited and are fully compensated by the employer. Americans, ladies working on an hourly rate etc. will have to make their own decisions based on their own legal and financial situation.
If you suffer from severe menstrual pains that prevent you from working, or that make working too unpleasant to bear, let your employer know and ask for time off while the pain continues.
If your employer asks you if the pain is really that severe, you say yes. Yes it is.
If he or she says that “we”, as in the group with which you are working, are really in dire straits during that day, and that “we” really cannot bear to lose your input for the day, you say you are sorry that this should be so, isn’t fate cruel, and you’ll be leaving now because you are unable to work due to being in pain.
Do not at any point, under any circumstances, say that you will stay just this time and suffer through the day. Some Young Ladies or even Ladies of a Certain Age will do so out of a sense of loyalty or solidarity, or in the hopes that this sacrifice will be appreciated and remembered next time and will help her form a positive relationship with her supervisor.
This is a False Assumption. If you do not stick to your right to be excused due to severe pain, the next time you are in severe pain, your supervisor is most likely to say, “Well, you managed fine last time, didn’t you?”
Even if you stick to your guns on this second round and your employer grants you your leave, they will still be thinking that you are dodging work on a flimsy excuse. The whole thing is, in a word, highly likely to backfire.
So, ladies: if you are in pain, you’re going home. End of story.
