Um… Yeah, I meant to post these on Thursday. Clearly I need some more time getting my butt in gear. Anyway, here we go!
-
Section: Humans vs. Animals
Can Animals Be Gay? – New York Times article by Jon Mooallem. Main point made: animal behavior is not about human behavior; writing down what albatrosses do isn’t the same as making a political point. Biologists would like people to get that, but they mostly don’t.
Have you checked your human privilege? – A call for more feminists to join the animal rights move, basically. Warning: May make you angry.

Section: How (Not) To Talk About Other People
New York Woman Murdered For Being a Woman – Bird of Paradox accounts a tragic case where NYT didn’t report nearly as well.
Lena Chen on Assault By Photograph – Washington City Paper article by Amanda Hess.
Derailing For Dummies – Google Cache Reconstruction – Bird of Paradox reconstructs a page that seems to have disappeared. It’s a good one – on how discussion can be derailed from the concerns of a particular group to be all about another (privileged) group.
-
Section: Protest
Fuck Yeah Protest – a Tumblr photoblog that posts images of protests.
The Church of the Flying Spaghetti Monster has staged a counter-protest to Westboro Baptist Church’s demonstration at the South Carolina State House.
Xiphias suggests here a counter-protest in the form a tea party to greet the members of the “Tea Party” movement at a rally in Boston in April 14th.
-
Section: Fictional Lives
Man Arrested at Large Hadron Collider – my favourite April Fool’s article this year.
Jet Bike Steve – the Twitter account of Simon Pegg’s modern day Robin Hood pirate superhero.
-
Section: Religion
Can Science Explain Heaven? – Lisa Miller on the scientific explanation of near death experiences.
The Episcopal Church, Wiccans and the Divine Feminine – Maria Segelstein reports in WorldMag.com on how Wiccans hold a meeting at an Episcopal Church. This is held up, especially in the comments, as an example of how bad Episcopalians are. As an atheist-Pagan-waverer I find the whole thing amusing.
Police Work With Wicca Community After Stabbing – The Witch Vox news links page linking to a KOAT article. Linking to Witch Vox rather than KOAT directly for the comments. A woman claiming to be Wiccan (but who doesn’t even know the difference between Ostara and Beltane) has committed murder.

Section: Creative Output
Kaj Stenvall continues to be one of my favourite artists. I may have linked to him before, and I usually try never to double-link, but in this case I just DON’T CARE. It’s ducks. It’s awesome.
The First Ever Dreamwidth Age of Sail Anonymous Kink Meme. “Kink memes” are occasions where one participant suggests a story idea – presumably kinky, but not necessarily so – and another anonymously writes a very short piece of fiction based on that idea. This one is “Age of Sail” -themed, which means they’re looking for prompts for historical or fictional characters from the great age of sail (about 1750s to 1830s, I believe). Fun!

Section: Always the Misfit
Dear Coke Talk – “Shady advice from a raging bitch who has no business answering any of these questions.” Warning: She does blow.
